Recap: Our First Brain Injury Support Group at HealthSouth

11/02/2015

On Wednesday, October 14, HealthSouth Middletown, Delaware, held its first Brain Injury Support Group in conjunction with the Brain Injury Association of Delaware.  This support group will be meeting on the second Wednesday of every month at HealthSouth Middletown.  The goal of the meetings is to help individuals and their caregivers living and coping with the effects of brain injuries, including but not limited to stroke and traumatic brain injury. Here, staff hopes to provide a positive and engaging environment where participants are able to meet others with similar experiences, offer support, share information, and learn about community resources.

The first meeting was quite successful!  Participants were from the community, former patients, and current patients. All were eager to participate and learn about each other, from each other and from HealthSouth Middletown’s staff.  The Brain Injury Association of Delaware was represented as Sharon Lyons, Vice President, was in attendance and helped facilitate the meeting.  There were also board members from the Brain Injury Association of DE as well as rehabilitation staff members from HealthSouth who specialize in brain injury recovery, including Mozghan Hines, (DPT, Director of Therapy Operations), Caitlin Davis (SLP), Jessica Aaron (SLP), and Joe Kardine (OT).   There were two full hours of personal stories, laughter, and tears along with countless encouraging words and hugs.

“Seeing these people and hearing their stories remind us of why we do what we do.”

“I was so hyped when I left. It was amazing.”

“It was very motivating and eye opening, I am glad to be a part of this!”

“It was so invigorating! Seeing people come back and share more of their long term journey is very motivating as a clinician.”

Everyone is looking forward to the next meeting in November and hope to have even more new faces in attendance!
